somewhere there are children wearing sequins / and we are them / but they are

not us / and they are swirling in aquarium light somewhere / the scent of hot

tar melting in the sun / still tickling the inside / of their noses / their hands

painted in chalked colors / like crushed candy and we wonder if they know /

that one day / all this sharpness / will dull / like the reddened point / of a

matchstick

Mariel Fechik lives in Chicago, IL and works in a library. She sings for the bands Fay Ray and Moon Mouth and writes music reviews for Atwood Magazine and Third Coast Review. She is a Bettering American Poetry nominee and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Hobart, Tinderbox Poetry Journal, Sundog Lit, and others.
